Choose the Right Tree for Organic Growing Success

The biggest mistake new growers make is choosing and planting the wrong tree

A well-chosen fruit tree will be healthy and productive. But a poorly chosen fruit tree - even with the best of care - will never thrive. In this online class, fruit tree care educator Susan Poizner will teach you the factors to consider when researching your fruit tree including climate zones, disease resistance, pollination requirements, root stock choices, staggering the harvest and more.

What you will learn in this course:

  • Why buying a fruit tree from a "big box store" may be a mistake! Specialist fruit tree nurseries have a wider selection of varieties - including easier-to-grow cultivars that are less likely to experience common fruit tree diseases.

  • How to ensure that your fruit tree produces fruit! Many fruit trees require specific pollination partners to ensure a harvest. Others require a minimum number of chill hours to set fruit.

  • Why root stock choice and planting distances are important. Your root stock choice will determine the size of your tree when mature. So a little tree at the store may become a huge tree that is hard to prune and harvest.

Researching Fruit Trees was a great introduction to many topics related to planning for and choosing fruit trees for your growing project! The material is presented clearly and accessibly through high-quality audio and slides/photos. Even for someone who knows about trees and works as a Certified Arborist, there were things that I was happy to learn about. I think my favourite new information was about chill hours, and tip- versus spur-bearing trees. Understanding some of the options for high-density and espalier plantings was very interesting and has me dreaming of what I might do once I have some property to plant. Many thanks, Susan and the Orchard People team!

I had the opportunity to take the "Researching Fruit Trees" course during my January season of learning...when it's a bit cold to plant outside. I enjoyed the course. It is very well organized, with well illustrated points. Susan is an enthusiastic and effective presenter. It would be excellent for an aspiring small scale fruit farmer, with a nice mix of inspiration and education. As an experienced gardener, it is a great refresher, and I finished understanding some tree biology that I thought I knew...but now understand better. The real life exercise of putting together a tree order was an excellent reality check! I'm super excited about the trees I've ordered, and teetering on the edge of tackling a living apple fence. Great idea to take this before getting to far down the orchard path.
